What’s better than barbecue sauce? Answer: Free Money!! Besides that, there ain’t too many things that can beat a good thick (and for me, spicy) sauce to slather all over your meats. Even some fishies taste great with a good sauce. And ya know what even better than a good bbq sauce? Why, a good bbq sauce that you make yourself of course. And in this post we are going to learn how to make an easy homemade barbecue sauce that you’ll love for days.
And for those new to the site, we believe in making things easy – so our sauce is going to be simple to make. If you keep the standard ingredients that prepare most of the popular American foods, then I’m pretty sure that you already have in you cabinets and fridge everything we are going to need. We’ll promise not to throw any crazy ingredients at you that you’ll need to look up too. Like I said, we’re going to make this recipe easy. Let’s do it.
A Quick Word on Sauce
Remember fellas, the key to barbecue sauce is to make sure that it tastes good. That’s it. Don’t even get caught up in barbecue having to taste a certain way, because it tastes all kinds of ways. St. Louis barbecue is different from Carolina barbecue. And that’s distinctly different from how they do it in Memphis. And them boys are different from Kansas City’s style. Which is nothing like Texas. And we ain’t even begun to talk about that white stuff they do in Alabama!
Look – the point you want to make a sauce that tastes good to you and yours. That should be your focus. Remember, when the cowboys on the frontier were cookin’ their food around the campfire, they used what they had at their disposal. Or at least that’s how the legend goes.
Me personally, I like a thick, rich, dark & spicy sauce. In my opinion, that’s good barbecue. That may or may not be what you consider a good sauce. And that is perfectly fine. Just keep this in mind:
“Barbecue” is any sauce that contains vinegar and tomato paste as the base. It may include a sweetener, a pepper, mustard, molasses, or a spice. Or all of these.
Got it? Good. The last word on the topic is this; just use whatever you have in your home that a) has these ingredients b) conforms to your personal tastes, and c) can be used for basting, as a marinade, a topping, or as a condiment. If it can do all of that, then congratulations! You have just made your own sauce.
But if you would still like a point in the right direction, try this…
Let’s Make a Sauce!
This is an easy homemade barbecue sauce. Here’s what you need:
1 cup Ketchup (or tomato sauce)
1 cup Red wine vinegar (or you can use any vinegar)
1 cup butter
2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or soy sauce)
2 minced garlic cloves (or 2 teaspoons of garlic powder, hot sauce or hot pepper)
1/2 cup molasses (optional)
1/2 cup water (optional)
Get a pan big enough to mix these ingredients into and cook on the stove top. Pour all of your ingredients into your pan and mix them up. Place the pan on the stove top and cook over low or medium heat. Stir occasionally and bring your mixture to a boil. Allow your mixture to cool and then refrigerate overnight.
When you take it out of the fridge, you will have an easy homemade barbecue sauce for whatever you need. Enjoy it folks!
