Learn How to Grill Some Delicious BBQ

Welcome! Come on in and relax. How was it getting here? I hope those directions were easy to understand. Is there any parking left?

Hey, we’re glad you made it; here, have a cold one. As you can see, most folks are over there by the food. And of course I’m still here on the grill! But go ahead and enjoy yourself…

Doesn’t that sound familiar? We all know that conversation as the kind of talk that takes place when a group shows up at the backyard cookout. Great times, right?

And speaking of great times, in my mind there are few things in life more relaxing and enjoyable than chilling with people you care about over some food off the grill. What could possibly be better?

Well, what could be better is when the guy giving the warm welcome from his spot on the grill is you! That’s right folks, its time for you to learn that time honored tradition. There’s an inner peace and fulfillment that comes from cooking on the grill. Seriously, when you learn how to grill, you will be amazed at how much fun it can be!

I have always loved cookout food ever since I was a kid. During those summers growing up, we would always cookout at the big family house. It was pretty regular, but infrequent enough to make each time special. I loved everything about those cookouts, because although the family gathered throughout the year for the holidays & other stuff, it wasn’t the same as when we had that grill fired up. For me, that’s what really made it an event. In them days, I was still a kid. The only ‘contributing’ I did was to run around playing with the other children. Hell, I couldn’t tell you what kind of grill my uncle had. But the aroma from it once it got fired up will never leave me. Man, those were the days.

These days, things have changed some. As a grown man with his own family, it’s me doing the grilling, which is fine. And funny Everstryke Perma Matchenough, whenever me & the boys get together, with or without our families, I’m still the grill man. And hey – that suits me fine. Cooking out isn’t just a passion of mine; over the years, its become a hobby. That means you can rest assured that I’m not just some guy that does burgers & dogs on the grill every 4th. Believe me, cooking out every day is my ultimate objective!

Why This Site?

Learn to Grill, so you don't do THIS!

Learn to Grill, so you don’t do THIS!

The purpose of is to help you. My intention is to help out our visitors that like cookout food, barbecue, or grill food. (from this point, I’m going to use these terms interchangeably, because we all tend to have several names for the same thing…food cooked in the backyard on a grill). Heck, its pretty clear that I like it too. But maybe you haven’t had the chance to get on the grill on your own yet. And that’s why we’re here. We want people to enjoy the barbecue pastime on their own, as cooks. Its fun, and surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it!

In fact, outdoor cooking as a whole is enjoyed by all kinds of folks all over the world, but grilling is something like a man’s rite of passage. Every dude should know how to throw down in the backyard! And ladies, you are most certainly welcome here too. But having the ability to barbecue a decent meal is still something the fellas need to learn. After hanging around our site for a bit, you’ll have plenty of skills.

Who is This Site For?

So who can benefit from this site? Everyone! Including:

  • Those just starting out on their own
  • The ladies
  • The do-it-yourself types
  • People that are new to the country (unfamiliar with American style barbecue)
  • Folks that want to become the ‘Grill Man’ in their circle of family and friends
  • Individuals that never got around to learning the skill in the past
  • Any and everyone that enjoys good cookout food
  • YOU!!!

Why Cookout Everyday?

That’s a great question. Why would you want to learn how to grill out everyday? Because its fun! Okay, maybe you won’t do it every day (since it does rain sometimes), but those of us that grill often do it because we love it! And I am absolutely sure that once you learn how to grill, you will enjoy it as much as I do. And the main reason you’ll love it is because the food tastes so darn good. Not to mention, there’s something about getting that grill fired up that ends up getting into your blood. From my experience, that’s when you’ll find yourself doing it more often.

Over the years, I have noticed that the common perception is that the ‘cookout season’ only spans from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and then the grill is mothballed till next year. Well, not in my house. To many serious grillers, there is no such thing as a ‘season’ for cooking out. This ain’t football or christmas. No sir. Heck, as long as the sun goes up into the sky, that’s a fine opportunity to get out back and fire her up. As far as I know, the barbecue tastes great on New Years Day, just like it does on the 4th of July. A whole lotta folks agree – soon, maybe you will too. But we’ll get there.

Not to mention, cooking out often is great practice for honing your skills. And just like anything else,
you will improve your skills in grilling with plenty of practice. AND you & yours get to eat the homework…what’s better than that?

What This Site is About

Its pretty straightforward. The purpose of this site is to help you learn how to grill with charcoal. Charcoal is what I use, so that’s what I will show ya. And the first thing to know is that although there are proper techniques to learn, everybody cooks a little differently. And that’s fine. Shoot, its also part of the fun. One day you’ll get invited to someone’s cookout, get to talking with the cook & pick up a tip. He (or she) may even give you a few ideas to try when you get home. That’s all part of it.

Our job here at is just to get you exposed to this wonderful world, and getcha started on your own. In no time, you will find your groove in the grilling game. I promise.

Another one of our aims is to help you get set up with your own charcoal grill & all those fine accessories you need. We will let you know what you need to have to fire up that grill today, and what can wait till next time. And we also intend to show you a fancy item or two that will function as a useful accessory, when you’re ready. Mostly, it’s about pointing you in the right direction so you can begin creating your own backyard memories. That’s what this is all about. Good food & great memories. Shoot, that stuff goes hand-in-hand. So c’mon inside.

Let’s get started!

What a mouthwatering picture at the top, makes me hungry.
I love BBQ’s, I think it’s the best way to cook meat.
Great site full of useful tips and advice.

I am inclined to agree with you. Regardless of the day of the year of time of day, a cookout is always a good idea and a great time.

That pictures does look yummy :) I love to grill but we don’t do it as often as I’d like. I’ll have to start doing it more, live in AZ so it’s almost always perfect weather for a cookout. Also I think charcoal is the only way to go, I dislike propane grilling.

    • Otis says:

I’m glad you enjoy the pics Stacy. I must say, you live in the perfect state for cooking out everyday — I’m jealous! I’m a Marylander, so us East Coasters have to don our cold weather gear to stay warm when we fire that grill up during the winter. And OF COURSE charcoal is the only way to enjoy barbecue. 😉

Hi Otis, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve just eaten, when you catch that whiff coming from your neighbor’s back yard, you get hungry all over again. Here in South Africa, it’s so popular that we have a National Braai(Grill or Barberque) Day on 24 Sept every year, very much like you have Thanksgiving. Great site!

    • Otis says:

Thank you for your comments Lydia. I am happy that you shared National Braai Day with us. As you may know, today is the day before Thanksgiving here in the U.S. & many people here do enjoy frying their turkeys in their backyards. Although it isn’t ‘grilling’ by definition, it still counts as outdoor cooking. It’s great!

And yes, some things truly are universal. I think everyone gets and hunger pang and a twinge of jealousy when they smell their neighbors grill. I have thought of it myself.
